play-style might be the best description, as type is already implied. style is more descriptive.
as for how many wrong names for 814 i have up my sleeves, idk.
i recommend we just have ground, air, and misc. that would do the job imo. it is fine if valhalla and dire are grouped together. 914 can just be put with them, or in misc, i really don't care.

726 is such a great concept map, but I really hate it as a map in 1v1 as z.

i only hate the map because the first time i played it, i did not realize my lurkers could not get down the ramp until it was too late. we should have more small ramp maps :D

Well, I have been able to pull off some pretty nice victories on 666 with zerg. My stats should be positive there (though small). And those were enemies that were better than me mostly. Though I guess it's because those guys were unable to handle a non-standard map.

i would like to know the stats of 911.

stats are seldom very useful because pro games have too large of a margin of error, and when they don't, what they are able to do routinely may not be applicable for the rest of us. a good map for them might be obviously imba for the rest of us.
stats of ladders might be more useful but then you get the factor of what "newbies" are unable to do, factoring in a little too much.
so i would go with neither, but simply find maps that good/decent players of all races have no problem playing, for the most part.

If stats are not reliable, then the same accounts for your or anyone's feeling about a map's balance.
When checking stats, you have to check them properly, of course. Differentiate between skill levels (pro, good, mediocre - newbs suck on any map, it has next to no effect for them), and on maps like LT you even have to consider positional matchups.

you can't differentiate between skill levels any more reliably than a large sample of known people can provide their approval or disapproval.
newbs suck at different rates depending on various features. they do not necessarily even out.

"hey! a five" was ok on the 1st version, where terran could liftoff a command center.
when they tried to "balance" it... become a P>T
ok i found it on teamliquid:
815 = PvT: 6-7 (46.2%)
An interesting point is that once 815 was remodeled and changed to 815 III, the balance went to hell and Protoss rampaged over Terran 18-7. modified by Testbug

A ladder with a fairly long season produces quite a good skill distribution at the end of the season. Newbs will be excluded anyways, and to achieve a high rank you usually have to win more than 10 games, so luck is pretty much ruled out, too.
Map stats based on skill levels in such a ladder are a very reliable source. Though taking the skill into account hasn't been tried until now, as far as I know.

island
hybrid
ground
weird
is that list ok? I want to include that tomorrow or today.

"hybrid" is stuff like arkanoid or iron curtain?
make "weird" be "other", or just drop it (i dont know what maps you refer to with that)

well I think of hybrid as "estrella like". Real "island maps" would be dire straits, and thats pretty much it ;P
imo there is quite a difference between maps that play like ground maps without rush, and real island maps.

okay...
of course we have thousands of maps where we are not sure if the playtype is correct now. Default is "ground".
