You spawn with some army squads too.

The starting units are mainly static area control (12 lurkers, 4 tanks with siege mode researched, and 8 vultures with spider mines researched).
I agree with you, I reckon a PTZ map without starting units would be fun, infact I did do a version of Snowflake Sandwich like that a while back.
The terrain of this map is designed for having a start army, what with the 4 entrances to the main etc.
There is creep around the hatchery, space for spawning pool etc.
Lack of gas is on purpose because the enemy unit composition can vary so widely that it might be a bit more fun and less chaotic to artificially discourage lots of tech switching.
Also the map is very tight, I think it would be fun to have lots of low tech mineral units dying en masse to just a few gas units set up in good positions with adequate support.
Its meant to be small armies with lots of micro.
But again its just an april fools!
