A link to the map pic, starting the game in melee (map preview), and a simple test-game against a comp can tell you just as much, the test game even more than revealing the whole map.
I am against it for various reasons which have all been named in the thread already.
I thought about that already a while ago (Obviously, because in the last months I pretty much did not think about SC anymore at all^^). I like it, as it gives players who don't know a map a fair chance to adopt their strategies to a map. It would make it much easier to play "unknown" maps with people who are no map-testing enthousiasts.
To do it right though, one would need some pretty tricky triggers. Not just putting map revealers for a secound and then deleting them, but first show the map, and only then place the buildings of the players. Those maps would be harder to make than normal observer maps and it would be even easier to fuck them up (if it can be done at all). I assume still 20% of obs maps here dont work correctly, that would even rise...
hmm I just tried to make those triggers..pretty damn tricky.
You need to remember the race and the position for each player. If you want to do it with switches like I planned to, you need at least 4*3*4 = 48 switches, and I'm not even sure it'd work :O Maybe black holes in the fog are acceptable after all....^^
edit: lol, I forgot you can actually just place fog-of-war-less areas in normal staredit without map revealer units and stuff. modified by panschk[FP]
You would probably use one death counter per player that stores his race, and one location that stores his position.
BUT:
a) I am not sure if the probes/drones/SCVs and especially the overlords will be placed correctly
b) you would have to wait for some time since it takes a while until you get vision and until the fog returns.
c) the creep will still be there, and you can't create larvae. A - by triggers - newly created hatchery spawns one larva initially, not 3. You can't keep the larvae either, since they would be visible and could block the creation of the hatchery.
d) there are probably some more issues I haven't thought of yet
All in all, what you, panschk, tried, is not _really_ possible. Well, ok, there are some advanced tricks in mapping so that all this stuff is actually doable. If the map is designed for that. And it would just be overkill.
If you give vision (and remove that vision afterwards) with the mainbases while the buildings and creep are there, they will be visible. I explained why you can't make triggers so that you remove the buildings, give vision, and recreate the buildings.
I'm saying just reveal minerals and gas, like hilite just the blocks and geyser itself of the expos. They should know the sl location before hand as the mapper can just tell them where they are. Most maps have sls in gay corners anywayz -_-
You guys are really over complicating things. Let me make it as simple as I possible can.
There is a filter (units/locations/doodads etc) for fog of war. Parts you undo fog of war from will momentarily be visible at the start of the game. Everything else will be normal (black).
Parts to make black via black cirlces: Main base. Every expo.
Parts to undo fog of war: Everything else. Simple.
