I wanna do this for a long time ago, but actually I doesnt have the necessary support in the Clan, till now.Not everyone is interested so much in the development process of new maps.I mean I always wanna support the work of talented people in their creative work so good as I can.I think to playin their maps is appreciation and thankfulness at the same time.
And because now I have the OK I announce a Contest financially supported by the Clan - Defenders of Gaia -.Everyone is invited to take part of this. You,the devoted mappers are the reason why many of us still playin StarCraft. And this Contest is a way to say, thank you!
Now the rules:
-the only allowed size is 128*128
-only 2&4 player maps are allowed
-nearly evry tileset is allowed, with one exeption:ash. It wasnt my idea but a majority decision. The main argue was that ash maps dont have the impact on players like the other tilesets - a possible reason why their are so few ash promaps. My opinion is that ash maps have a special, unique charm.
-second or third versions of older maps are not allowed. Finally,we try to support creativity
-no more than one map pro person
-co-productions are not allowed. These are maps maded by more than one person
-the map must be maded between 1&15 december 2007.On 15 december the contest ends
The maps for this contest could be posted in this thread or send via e-mail to me on: vergo_lix@gmx.de
What you can expect is a fair, full democratic decision assured by a 6 team, our clan. Also,I assure everybody that no one in this team have friend(s)wich will join in this contest.
The winner will be announced a week at latest after the end of the contest. The winner prize is 50€.So do your best.
I would be glad to see also inactive mappers like LGI,Antares, etc joining in this contest.I'm sure they still have the skills to win.
-_-.Feel free to use any concept you want,so long it fits in the rules. The only guidance is that the maps must have a good playability.Maybe you should avoid experimental concepts.
We think 2 weeks is time enough to make a good map.1 week to think about a concept plus 1 week for the execution should be adequat for a good mapper. Finally we don't wanna interfere in your Chritmas time.Nor we can be sure that we come together in this period.Everyone knows that alot of people have plans for this time.
If there's no theme, and very simple rules, I don't see what makes making a map for this competition special as compared to just making a map normally lol. Is it going to be played in some tournament or something? What happens to the winning map?
"Will you be playing the maps or just looking at the pictures?" I think both of them.First the one than the other -_-
"If you play the maps will you post the replays here?" Sure, why not.
For the rest of your comment firstly I have a remark.Cutting out some parts from different comments of mine don't can really guide you to a contradiction about the intention of this contest.Learn to judge things in a context.
I haven't written in my first comment - "Finally,we try to support creativity." - but "second or third versions of older maps are not allowed. Finally,we try to support creativity".What you pick out was a explanation for a rule in this contest.
In my second comment is this -"Maybe you should avoid experimental concepts" - also in a larger context."Feel free to use any concept you want,so long it fits in the rules. The only guidance is that the maps must have a good playability.Maybe you should avoid experimental concepts."I try to make clear that we are not define boudaries in this creative process. However we don't wanna encourage people wasting their time puzzle on museum exhibits. And as the most know experimental maps doesn't offer the same good playability like a standard map. They always force you to play in a different way.All this swarms, disr.field and neutral building restrict substantially a players strategical posibilities in a game. That's why standard maps>experimetal maps, when u judge playability.
If is the only way to be creative - your choice.Nevertheless it's a evidence of incapacity.Instead of trying to show the community your skills with a interessting/unusual concept, you just add into a normal map tons of neutrals or spells. It your decision...
That's why you see a contradiction where no conntradiction actually is.
To Nightmarjoo:
Like I said before, forcing anyone to follow a prefab concept/theme means actually to set boundaries.Of course you can be creative also inside of a theme contest, but we don't wanna push you in a specific direction.
What make this contest so special you wanna know.Well from our point of view,we hope to receive some nice maps for the entire community. On there we can have some fun. From a mapper point of view is to make a map better than all the other mappers. That's why we allow you to pick yourself out the tileset from that you believe you can reach this better. Also we wanna know what everyone is able to do individually whitout help from others(the no co-production rule).
On the other hand we wanna sponsor playable maps. That's why the 128*128 and the 2/4 players rules. This atributtes should ensure a maximum of playability.
"Is it going to be played in some tournament or something?"If the quality is good everything is possible. But our first priority is to support financially the work of talented people.Btw to bring maps into some tourneys is something what many here can do.LGI,NastyMarine, etc And I'm sure they will do it if we receive the proper maps.
"What happens to the winning map?" This map will become the atributte-Winner of the first Defenders of Gaia Map Contest-and the winner will gain the 50€ price.
DG)SpoilR, thanks for your reply, sorry if my comment sounded negative, I did not mean it that way and I apologize.
Having said that I must take issue with something you said. Some people like standard maps and that's fine with me. Others like me, however, are bored with standard maps and seek new horizons. Yes, we want to force players to play in new ways and develop new sets of skills. That is what has happened in Starcraft all these years. The experimental maps of yesterday are the classic maps of today.
Swarms, dwebs, neutrals and other such experimental stuff do not restrict the strategic and tactical possibilities of maps, rather they expand them depending, of course, on how you make the map.
You also said:
"If is the only way to be creative - your choice.Nevertheless it's a evidence of incapacity.Instead of trying to show the community your skills with a interessting/unusual concept, you just add into a normal map tons of neutrals or spells. It your decision"
This is not true. An experimental map is not made by merely adding a ton of sprites to standard maps. Some of us take experimental maps very seriously and think long and hard before making our maps.
Finally, yes I will be entering an experimental map into your competition and I hope you give it a fair and open minded review along with all the other maps you receive.
First week of this contest is over.Just for those who wanna participate.Read carefully the first comment. If you want that your maps reach us you must send the map to the e-mail from the first comment or if you upload it on BWMN put a link of your map in this thread or post at least the ID of the map you wanna participate to the contest.Something like:
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
2651-Round Lake-Lancet
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
This would be enough. But don't forget to do it.Otherwise don't be surprised if your map would find the way in the contest pool.
And another thing. If you send the map to the e-mail address we wont upload them on BWMN for you.U can do it yourself. We conclude that it's your decision to stay anonym.Only if the map wins it would be uploaded here.
that are sprites...
you can use them but be careful bacause bw might crash >.<
and units will pass them and go threw there so you allways need to place them on unwalkable places.
in scmdraft you go sprites > doodads > "enter tileset" > "whatever you want"
And those not only are "partial doodads" (they are missing a section of them) but they will not behave like doodads at all, units will go right under them. Download my map Round Lake or Trees of Ghelia and look at the large tree clumps. They have only a few real doodads overlaid with sprites just for cover. You can only use like 200 sprites but some units like Valkyries need sprites to function properly so make sure you don't use ALL of them, leave 20-40 unused.
