Expo's at 6 and 12 are designed such that after you finished gathering from the first one (9 chunk) you will get access to the second one (for low-eco late game, 6 chunks). Once the minerals at 9 and 3 are mined, by destroying buildings you can reach the middle of the map more easily, for a possible flanking or assault (avoiding his army).
i cant say it for sure, but i think workers at 6/12 will get crazy when mining. if all blocks are taken, workers will try to get to the minerals BEHIND the actual mineralline. test this please.
